Leadership

Staff

Scott Filkin was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from Wheaton College where he earned a BA in Psychology in 1996. Three years later, on his first day working as a college intern at First Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, CA, Scott met Jane, the other intern. This work arrangement turned out pretty well for them as they eventually fell in love and got married. Six months later, they headed for the Boston-area where they both earned M.Div.’s at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary. In 2004, Scott and Jane moved to Colorado in order for Jane to serve as the Associate Pastor of Community Life and Women’s Ministries at First Presbyterian Church in Boulder. Scott joined InterVarsity staff in January 2006 and is ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Jane and Scott have three little ones, Lucy, Kate, and Jed. Scott is a wicked die-hard for the Boston Red Sox and would read more literature if he had more time. He’s always up  for a chat over a cup of coffee at Trident or a beer at Mountain Sun.

The Exec

The Exec. Team serves as the brains of InterVarsity’s Graduate Christian Fellowship at the University of Colorado. They are the visionaries, the dreamers, the ones who set things in motion. They are committed to seeing graduate students at CU thrive through the ministry of GCF. Their objective is to help others integrate heart and mind for the service of Jesus Christ while having as much fun as possible!

Here’s a bit about the 2011-2012 team:

Scott Weirich is our President who hails from Houston, TX. He is dedicated to the health and spiritual growth of GCF and to following God’s guidance for the fellowship. Scott learned to drive on a 1951 army jeep with bullet holes in it.

Kate Du Mez fills the role of Administrative Exec. She helps to make sure that GCF functions as smoothly as possible. She is a Masters student in the Building Systems Program and is a cheesehead from Brookfield, WI. At 5’7″ tall, Kate is finally beginning to come to terms with the fact that she’ll never fulfill her childhood dream of becoming an NFL wide receiver.

Kelly Vincent is excited about supporting GCF’s small group ministry as the Small Group Exec. Kelly is a PhD student in philosophy who grew up in Gig Harbor, WA. Her favorite things include nicknames, team sports, and metaphysics. There’s a line from a movie which Kelly quotes quietly to herself every time she boards a plane or deplanes. If you can guess that line, she’ll give you a high five!

Travis Lund, as the Community Life Exec, is in charge of GCF event planning. He’s a PhD candidate in Biochemistry who hails from the redwood forests of Crescent City, CA. Travis has slept in a hammock on a beach in Thailand (during a tropical downpour), in the haunted tower of a Scottish castle, in a llama pasture in the Peruvian Andes, and in a luxury suite at the top floor of the Luxor in Vegas (thanks to a very fortuitous computer glitch).

Cammie Frothingham, the Relational Ministries Exec, works to support the health of the community, connecting and encouraging students, and setting up individual mentoring. She’s a Masters student in Speech Language Pathology, from Durham, North Carolina. Despite a general lack of talent playing instruments, Cammie spent a year performing in Mexico City’s best (and only) bluegrass band. Mostly back up dancing.

Jay Swamidass is the Service & Evangelism Exec. In that role, he seeks to guide GCF as it follows Christ’s example of meeting people’s needs – both physical and spiritual – with the Gospel. He is a second year law student who grew up in the “Loveliest Village on the Plains,” Auburn, AL. The first move Jay made out of his parents’ home was to Yunnan, China where he grew a huge beard, hung out with villagers, and wandered around in the mountains for two years.
